Our family visited Mystic Connecticut, for our Memorial weekend getaway. One of the things we enjoyed was the time we spent at the Mystic Seaport Museum! This destination is unique, and no matter your age, it will be a great experience for all.
Mystic Seaport Museum is known for being the largest maritime museum in the country. It is set up like a historic village and stretches over 19 acres along the shores of the Mystic River. While adults take in the history and charm of the place, the little ones can learn and have fun too with kid-friendly activities.
My 7-year old chid's favorites were climbing aboard a whaleship - the magnificent Charles W. Morgan, exploring the fleet of ships at the Playscape, learning while having fun at the Discovery Barn, and making his own wooden toy boat masterpiece! There are lots of activities and attractions to keep the kids busy and happy. You can also check out the Children's Museum, Planetarium, and Waterfront Tours. All the kid and family attractions are clearly labeled on the map, so be sure to grab one when you enter. Also, take note that some activities are seasonal, so be sure to check the Mystic Seaport Museum's website prior to visiting.
I personally like strolling through the recreated seafaring village. It's like going back in time and learning through the historians, storytellers, and craftspeople who bring this seafaring past back to life. It's fascinating to know that the buildings aren’t replicas, but are actual trade shops and businesses from the 1800s that were transported to Mystic Seaport Museum, from various locations around New England. It's a truly unique and unforgettable experience, and a must-do when you are visiting Mystic!
