Veterans Day 2019

By Gladys Dunbar November 7, 2019
Veterans Day is on Monday, November 11th. It is a day intended to thank and honor the men and women in the US Armed Forces, who fought and sacrificed to preserve our freedom. It is not to be confused with Memorial Day, celebrated in May, which honors those who gave their lives and passed while in service.

Here are things you can do and local events you can attend or support to honor Veterans.

Veterans Day Parade
November 11th at Downtown Albany
Attend the parade and encourage the kids to meet, say thank you and interact with Veterans.

There will be a ceremony at the USS SLATER on November 11th. Bring your favorite veteran down to join in the celebration and come meet some of our favorites, the volunteers of USS SLATER. After the ceremony stay for a tour of the only Destroyer Escort afloat in America, walk the decks like sailors did during WWII, Korean, and Vietnam Wars.

Veterans Resource & Career Expo
November 19th at SUNY Schenectady County Community College
Veterans and family members, don't miss out on this Veteran's Resource and Career Expo. Meet with employers, talk to VA reps and other service providers and take part in a panel discussion. The event is open to the community.

Groovin Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Legends
November 15th at Proctors Theatre

All net proceeds benefit the Capital Region NY2 Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc., members are proud mothers of children who are either on active duty or have been honorably discharged from the military.

Thank A Veteran
If you have a veteran in your family, a neighbor or a friend who is a veteran, please have your children write a thank you note, make a card , or color a Veterans day symbol like a Flag or a Poppy. This is a simple way to show our veterans how much we appreciate their service. Do something nice for them like invite them for a coffee or volunteer to take them out for a dinner.
