Family Day Trip Adventure: A Review of Howe Caverns

By Gladys Dunbar July 26, 2017
Do you remember our article 101 Day Trips in Upstate New York? Howe Caverns was included in our list of places to explore. Whether you live in the area or just driving through, Howe Caverns is an attraction you don’t want to miss! It’s the largest show cave in the Northeast and the 2nd most visited natural attraction in New York State.

It is conveniently located off Interstate 88 and is approximately 40 minutes from Schenectady NY. Howe Caverns is a popular family destination and host to school field trips. The property in Schoharie County also features Howe High Adventure Park, Howe Caverns Lodge, Howe Caverns Motel and HC Mining Company. The cave tours are open all year with seasonal days and hours, and the Howe High Adventure Park operates on Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Our adventure started with a greeting from an animatronic figure of Lester Howe, founder of Howe Caverns. After hearing its history,  our knowledgeable tour guide took us to an elevator which descended 156 foot below the earth’s surface. The sight underground was stunning! The pictures don’t do justice; it's truly an experience like no other and a sight that will take your breath away.

Apart from the guided 1 ¼ mile walk to see the various limestone formations, the tour also included a short boat ride midway. The cave was illuminated just enough to see where we were walking and had spot lights in appropriate areas to highlight stalagmites, stalactites, and flowstones.

Guests were asked to refrain from touching the formations and walls of the Cavern as dirt and oil from our hand could stunt its growth. But there was one spot where touching was allowed. It got everyone excited, and put a big smile on my child's face! I really appreciated this feature of the tour, because it means that they thought of their guests, and understood that for kids touching is a big part of learning.

Our favorites were the boat ride and the Winding Way, which was a walk thru a narrow passageway. The pathway ranged from 18 inches to 5 feet across, and 5 to 45 feet high. It had so many "S" turns that we lost track counting. My child was giggling all the way and wanted to turn around and do it again!

Overall we had a wonderful time at Howe Caverns and my child wanted to explore it again in the winter hoping to see bats! Howe Caverns is a must-see if you are in the area. It’s not only educational, it's fun and a great bonding experience for the whole family.

SOME TIPS:

1. Do your Homework. Prior to going, check Howe Caverns’ website and choose the Cave Tour and/ or other adventures that best suit your family.

2. Wear comfortable walking shoes. It’s a 1 ¼ mile walk through the Caverns with steps and gentle inclines.

3. Dress appropriately. The temperature underground remains constant at 52 degrees Fahrenheit all year long. Bring a jacket to be comfortable.

4. Bring a good camera. Underground lighting is minimal so adjust your camera settings accordingly to take great photos. Use of camera and flash are permitted. If you don’t own a good camera, don’t fret because there is a spot in the Caverns where guests are given the opportunity to have their picture taken. It is later printed and you have the option to buy it for a souvenir.

5. Set expectations with kids prior to visiting. Explain that caves may be dark, cold and damp and why touching the formations and walls are discouraged.
