One of the ways to beat Summer Slide is to READ. Local libraries and other businesses offer summer reading programs that encourage kids to read throughout the summer. Participation in these programs are free and help the kids set reading goals and keep track of their reading by providing incentives for reaching their goals. Here's a look at the ones we found for 2018:
Schenectady County Public Library
Every summer the library conducts a reading program for children of all ages. The program is intended to make summer reading a fun activity by providing incentives. How to join: Get your Summer Reading Sheet Card from any Schenectady County Public Library (SCPL) branch. After every 2 hours of reading, kids can turn in the sheet for a prize!
Open Door Book Store
The Open Door Bookstore wants you to "Get Caught Reading in Schenectady this Summer!" Post a photo on our facebook page of you or a family member reading in a recognizable or unusual spot in Schenectady County, and have a chance to win fabulous prizes from The Open Door Bookstore & Gift Gallery! This contest is for readers of all ages and runs from June 25 to Aug 15. Prizes will be awarded to the THREE most popular photos, based on the number of Facebook Likes!
Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Journal
Read any eight books this summer and record them in this Summer Reading Journal. Tell us which part of the book is your favorite, and why. Bring your completed journal to a Barnes & Noble store between May 15th and September 3rd, 2018 to earn a FREE Book! Download the Journal HERE.
TD Bank Summer Reading Program
Kids in Kindergarten through 5th Grade who read 10 books and record the titles on TD Bank's summer reading form will receive $10 in a new or existing Young Saver account. Note, you will need to either have or open a Young Saver Account for this program. Download Summer Reading from HERE.
Chuck E Cheese's Summer Reading Rewards
When kids read every day for two weeks, they can earn 10 free tokens at Chuck E Cheese! Print off this Reading Rewards Calendar, mark off every day, and bring it to Chuck E Cheese Latham to redeem tokens. The child must be present and food purchase is required. A beverage does not qualify as a food purchase. This offer extends through 12/31/2018.
