Review: Making Memories at Huck Finn's Playland

By Gladys Dunbar July 30, 2015
The Balloon Flight, 4x4 jeeps, Jolly Caterpillar, helicopter ride, and the Carousel coated with fresh paint, are back! I smiled when I heard the Iron Horse train's loud whistle as it goes around the park and through a tunnel, like it used to. My husband Dennis, had the perfect words for it. "Stepping into the park, evoked warm, fuzzy, happy feelings inside me. The same happiness I felt when I go to Hoffman's Playland. The sounds, sights, and the smell and taste of fried dough takes me back to the 1st time I went there when I was a little boy. It's Nostalgic."

Last week, my family visited Huck Finn's Playland and we were delighted to see all our favorite rides restored to life. Our beloved amusement park is back to bring the same kind of joy to all the little boys and girls who are there. The Serber Family and the team of Huck Finn's did a great job of reassembling the rides to it's new location at 25 Erie Blvd, Albany.

Our 3-year old son had a grand time, riding most of the kiddie rides by himself. He steered the 4x4 jeep like he was driving it, aimed his shooter seriously on the sky fighter, flew high on the helicopters and airplanes, and ringed the bell non-stop as his boat was sailing around. The park is perfect size for small children to get their fill of happiness for the day.

Aside from the rides themselves, the park attendants were very friendly and worked efficiently to keep the lines moving and make the rides safe for everyone. We also thought that the attractions are laid out better. All the kiddie rides are closer to each other on one side, and the thrill rides for bigger kids on the other side. The lines were short, we were able to get through all the kiddie rides, plus 3 train rides and 2 carousel rides in 2 hours.

The park has two entrances, both with ticket windows for convenience and ease. There are benches scattered around the park to rest, and two big tents with tables and benches for snacking or just to get a break from the sun. We also liked that the restrooms are bigger, and there are sinks that are shorter which tells you that it was made with children in mind. Small but important details that Families with children, really appreciate.

Here are some tips to make your Huckfinn's visit safe and memorable:

1. Plan ahead. Check Huckfinn's policies online. Outside beverage and food is not allowed so if you have food allergies or intolerant to any food that is being offered at the park and need to bring your own, it is prudent to call ahead and make arrangements.

2. Write your name and number somewhere on your child so that if they get lost, an employee will be able to find you. Take a picture of your child before venturing out in the Playland. This way, you will have a description from head to toe if you get separated. Make sure your child knows where to go or who to ask for help in case he is lost. For older children, agree on  a meeting place.

3. Comfort and Sun Protection. There is not much shade at Huck Finn's so put on sunscreen and make everyone wear a hat. You will be out in the sun for much of the day. Wear comfotable shoes and clothing. Plus bring an extra t-shirt to change into after.

4. Obey minimum height, age, and weight restrictions. They are there for a reason. If it is your child's first time, explain what he can do if he gets frightened during the ride and NOT to get out of their seat. Do not put a child on a ride that they may be afraid of.

5. Stay hydrated. Huck Finn's water fountain is by the restrooms. Bring a  water bottle for free refills all day.

6. Try going on a weekday when it is less crowded or late in the afternoon so it is not to hot and you can see the rides all lit up.

7. Aside from the rides, there are other things to enjoy like
face painting and going to the arcade which is beside Subway inside  Huck Finn's Warehouse.

8. Live a little and enjoy good 'ol park food. You can find a variety of Food, Snack, Ice Cream and Beverages at their concession stand. Another place to go if you want something different is Subway. You can find Subway inside Huck Finn's Warehouse and More.

9. Enjoy special savings when you bring a group. Groups of 25 people or more can purchase "Unlimited Rides" wristbands for just $16 each. It's a great deal! So plan a family reunion or go there with your other Mom friends.

10. Take pictures, and make memories that will last a lifetime at the Playland that Huck Finn calls the most authentic amusement park anywhere.
