Girls On the Run Capital Region

By LuAnn McCormick October 1, 2015
Transforming girls into joyful, healthy and confident young women is what Girls on the Run Capital Region is all about. Our 10-week curriculum, led by certified GOTR coaches, helps girls in 3rd to 8th grade learn more about who they are, the value of teamwork and social relationships, and understanding their connection with the world at large through community service. At the same time, they are engaging in fun running games, setting goals and learning about a healthy pace – in running and in life. Each season culminates with the team completing a 5K race together, giving them a tangible understanding of the confidence that comes through accomplishment. Running becomes both an activity as well as a metaphor for living.

GOTRCR is new to the region, but is part of a much larger movement. Girls on the Run International® has nearly 230 local councils throughout the United States and Canada and, collectively, served its one millionth girl this Spring 2015 season. Locally, GOTCR serves Albany, Rensselaer and Schenectady counties and is growing quickly. The program is offered in the Spring and Fall (now closed).

Every girl can be a Girl on the Run. Our local scholarship fund is supported through donations, grants and fundraising events. Approximately half of our girls receive full or partial scholarships. The program is not exclusive to the athletically inclined, but will build up participant confidence and endurance to complete a council wide 5k to celebrate their accomplishments.

Inaugural 5K Celebration Event

On Saturday, November 21, 2015 at 9:30AM at the Corning Preserve, Girls on the Run Capital Region will host its First Annual 5K Celebration! The 5K is the curriculum's culminating, celebratory event. Completing the 5k provides the girls with a tangible understanding of the confidence that comes through accomplishment as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. While the focus will be primarily on the girls, the event is open to the community, up to a total of 300 runners. Over 50 girls will celebrate the successful completion of the Fall season by running with their coaches, running buddies and families.  Crossing the finish line is a defining moment when the girls realize that even the seemingly impossible is possible.

Anyone who has been to a Girls on the Run 5K knows that it is unlike any other running event.  It is a celebration of and for the girls. By the day of the 5K, their enthusiasm is so unbridled that they are running around before the race!  Positive energy abounds as the girls dance to warm-up music, get their hair “happied” and "tattoos" on their faces, and gather with their teammates to hold hands as they head to the starting line.  Our 5K is a non-competitive event that will bring a smile to your face!  You will be so glad you joined us.

Saturday, November 21, 2015 – 5K starts at 9:30 am. For more information and to register, visit www.gotrcr.org | GOTR 5K.
